The Graduate Programs of RIHE
RIHE has two graduate programs for higher education studies, a doctoral (Ph.D.) program and a master (M.Ed. or M.A.*) program. These programs were established in 1986 as the first graduate programs for higher education research in Japan. In addition to these two degree programs, RIHE has also a non degree seeking program (research student: "kenkyusei" program).
  • Ph.D. program
  • Master program
  • Research student (Kenkyusei) program
Ph.D. and Master program are organized as departments under the Graduate School of Education as well as all other graduate programs in Japan belong to any of "the graduate school of" without exception. Thus "RIHE's student" as we say is the student from the Graduate School of Education on paper, though they study in the building of RIHE located apart from the one of the Graduate School of Education.
All lectures are taught in Japanese. Many overseas students have a good command of Japanese and have accomplished their coursework and thesis so far.
* At the end of the program, master candidates can choose the title of the degree, Master of Education or Master of Arts.

What is research student (kenkyusei) and for what?
Research student (kenkyusei in Japanese) means a non degree seeking program student who stays for generally less than one year. A kenkyusei usually attends the classes held in RIHE as an auditor and study his/her own research topic. Though a kenkyusei can neither get any credits during the period nor be given any qualification after the period, he/she can study his/her research topic freely from the pressure to get credit and finish coursework. Actually, many overseas students use this program for getting used to life in Japan, developing Japanese skill before entering the degree programs, and preparing to the entrance examination described below.

How to be a RIHE student? (Entrance examination)
Ph.D. and Master program
Applicant for both Ph.D. and Master program needs to come to Hiroshima University in person to take an entrance examination because RIHE does not have online application system. The entrance examinations will be held twice a year in September and February. The passer of the examinations will enter and start the programs from the beginning of April in the next academic year. The entrance examination consists of two written exams (special subject for higher education studies and Japanese for non native students) and an oral examination on your research project.

Research student (kenkyusei)
In the case of kenkyusei, you need not come to Hiroshima University for the procedure because the selection will be made on the basis of the documents submitted. But before applying, or taking the official procedures, you should choose a professor or an associate professor of RIHE academic staffs as your supervisor. If you have not decided a supervisor, please refer to RIHE academic staff.
Please feel free to contact any one of our academic staffs and consult about your research project. Admission for kenkyusei is at the beginning of each semester in April and October. We recommend you to take all necessary procedures six months before admission at the very latest.
